Work points for Petronella

1. Find as many elements as you can of traditional fairy tale elements in "Petronella"

2. In what way is it different from the traditional fairy tale? Does this make it better or not so good, in your opinion?

I guess more questions and work points will follow - perhaps some of them coming from you guys?

    -Three princes were always born.
    -King and Queen.
-All of the princes went out to seek their fortunes.
-The young prince always rescueds a princess, brought her home and ruled the kingdom.
All this was before King Peter and queen Blossom came along. Now:
-They all went out to seek their fortunes
    -A great dark forrest
-The road divided into three(3 - magical number)
-The young princess rescues an old man and he gets his freedom, and then helps the girl on her way
    -Three tasks
    -One enchanter
-Fail a task and you will die
-Seven huges black dogs, seven horses and seven great hawks(7-magical number)
-The comb became a forrest with threes so thick that no one could get between them

This is a bit like a modern fairy tale. In this story it is the princess thats rescues the prince from the enchanter.
Also the prince is very lazy and dosen't want to do anything, and in real fairy tales the prince is always the one who does all the taks and rescues the princess.
In a real fairy tale the prince always ends up with the princess, and in this story it is the princess that ends up with the enchanter.

I think that this fairy tale is very good and funny. I like it when girls can have a little bit of temper, and do the same things that the boys are alowed to do. :)

  2. Just a thought, if anyone who's doing a HF during the day wants to meet up & chat - in English of course - about the material we are reading, or if anyone has a problem with grammer & needs some advice, we could meet in the canteen, library, etc at some point. It might make a nice change to chat instead of just writing on the bog, oops blog! I am at HF most days except Thursdays and have lunch there on Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Fridays. Let me know....

I think that the fairy tale Petronella is a parody of a traditional fairy tale. It has a lot of the same elements as a traditional fairy tale, as mentioned in an earlier comment on the fairy tale, but it is obviously not written to children. Children don’t have the same pre-understanding and sense of humor as adults, and that is needed when you are reading Petronella.

  5. To Dave. That would be nice, I would love to practice my spoken english.
Now to Petronella: I had a god laugh, the story is really funny.
    1. Elements: King and queen. Princes and princesse. 3 taskes ( magic number). Enchanter. 7 Horses ( Magic number).

    2. It is different because its a princesse who is the main character and she has to rescue the lazy prince. The enchanter is a good person and he falls in love with the stronge princesse. Thats funny. I like i better than an ordinary fairytale but for children it may not be so good. My daughter liked it because the princess was strong and wise.

  6. To Dave... I feel the same as Elsebeth. I would also like to practice my spoken english. So lets find a day we all can agree on... That would be nice! :)

  7. There are many fairy tale elements in Petronella: 3 Princes, 3 roads, 3 tasks, 3 rewards, a forest, a King & Queen who live in a castle on a mountain - high up, flatlands below - where their fortunes were to be found, a wise old man - who advises which way to go, an enchanter - a male version of a witch.
I think that Petronella is a modern fairytale as the main character is a heroine instead of a hero. She is strong and compassionate, whereas the prince she finds is weak & lazy. I am glad that she ended up with the enchanter, as the Prince seemed to be boring, lazy & completely unmotivated, happy to stumble his way through life without purpose.
It is an interesting fairy tale to read, as you expect something to happen but something totally different occurs, which gives the story an unexpected twist.
To Elsebeth & Maria - I will have lunch on Tuesday 28th & Wednesday 29th outside room 207. If you are at college, maybe we could arrange something then. If not my mobile number is 29892307 & we can sort something out, which suits us all.

  8. Yes this fairy tale is a bit more modern than the previous two we have read. I googled it and this fairy tale was published in 1973 so it is relatively new. This is why we see a heroine as the main character, who chooses not to marry the real prince but takes the wizard instead.

However there are still a lot of classic fairy tale elements. The King & Quenn, The three princes, a prinsess, the three roads, the three secrets, the helper(old man), seven animals etc.

I like these modern fairy tales rather than the classic ones, cause they are more unpredictable you are not quite sure what is going to happen. And they represent the real life better than the old ones where the good people always wins, which is not entirely true.

  9. OMG, I turn my back on you guys for a sec and you create groups and arrange dates - way to go!!! A wonderful idea!

I'm glad you like Petronella - so do I! Why is a female protagonist chosen?

Why apply all the classic fairy tale elements to a modern story? What stereo types are challenged - there are several; I challenge you!

    - Must admit, I love this blog, thanks!

  10. To Elsebeth & Maria, I won't be at college today (Tuesday) as my classes are cancelled.

  11. 1. Some of the typical elements.
    Kings, queens, princes and princesses.
    The number 3 and 7.
The helper/old man is under a spell, and is released by the main character.
    The dark forest.
Have to seek their fortune (task)

    2. The fairy tale is different since the characters are not as you expect them to be. See below.

I like this type of fairy tale, because it is full of surprices. You don't know what to expect. With the more traditional fairy tales, you do not always have to read the whole story to figure out what is going to happen.

    3. Answer to Chanett
Some of the stereo types challenged are:
Princess Petronella. A female who takes on the masculine role.
Prince Ferdinand. A spoiled prince, who is not charming.
Petronellas brothers takes the easy way out, and do not seek the danger, but sends their sister to danger.

  12. 1. Find as many elements as you can of traditional fairy tale elements in "Petronella"

Characters: Kings, queens, princes and princesses.

    Number : 3 and 7.

Setting: kingdoms, princeses, princesses, symbolism (for instance a forrest, the girl etc.), tests (seek their fortune) and magic.

    2. In what way is it different from the traditional fairy tale? Does this make it better or not so good, in your opinion?

I will say that the story is different from the traditional fairy tale. And I think the difference makes the story even better. First of all because we have a known author. Secondly, because we don’t have to waste our time with the classical opening, and also because the kingdom gets a name – Skyclear Mountain. In fact all the characters have names. Bearing all this in mind I will say that Petronella is a modern upside- down version of a folk tale. I really think that many kids and especially girls like this kind of stories. And if we take the writer, Jay Williams, we have the chance to draw parallels with his known opinion about females. He was a famous writer, who likes to talk about the resourceful courageous of female protagonists. And that is exactly what makes the story special and interesting.

And furthermore I have question. Which themes will you say that we have in this story ? Because, I was wondering about it. :-)

  13. Stereotypes challenged in the story are as follows;
1 Usually it is the oldest prince who inherits the kingdom.
2 Usually a comb hasn't got any magical powers, whereas a mirror & ring do.
3 The enchanter ends up being the fiancè instead of the prince.
4 I agree with the points Julie has made.
